요한복음 11장: 47-57

47 이에 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 공회를 모으고 이르되 이 사람이 많은 표적을 행하니 우리가 어떻게 하겠느냐

48 만일 그를 이대로 두면 모든 사람이 그를 믿을 것이요 그리고 로마인들이 와서 우리 땅과 민족을 빼앗아 가리라 하니

49 그 중의 한 사람 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바가 그들에게 말하되 너희가 아무 것도 알지 못하는도다

50 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽어서 온 민족이 망하지 않게 되는 것이 너희에게 유익한 줄을 생각하지 아니하는도다 하였으니

51 이 말은 스스로 함이 아니요 그 해의 대제사장이므로 예수께서 그 민족을 위하시고

52 또 그 민족만 위할 뿐 아니라 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 미리 말함이러라

53 이 날부터는 그들이 예수를 죽이려고 모의하니라

54 그러므로 예수께서 다시 유대인 가운데 드러나게 다니지 아니하시고 거기를 떠나 빈 들 가까운 곳인 에브라임이라는 동네에 가서 제자들과 함께 거기 머무르시니라

55 유대인의 유월절이 가까우매 많은 사람이 자기를 성결하게 하기 위하여 유월절 전에 시골에서 예루살렘으로 올라갔더니

56 그들이 예수를 찾으며 성전에 서서 서로 말하되 너희 생각에는 어떠하냐 그가 명절에 오지 아니하겠느냐 하니

57 이는 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 누구든지 예수 있는 곳을 알거든 신고하여 잡게 하라 명령하였음이러라

 

John 11: 49-57

47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. 'What are we accomplishing?' they asked. 'Here is this man performing many miraculous signs.

48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.'

49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, 'You know nothing at all!

50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.'

51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,

52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.

56 They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"

57 But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, he should report it so that they might arrest him.

47 이에 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 공회를 모으고 이르되 이 사람이 많은 표적을 행하니 우리가 어떻게 하겠느냐

47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. 'What are we accomplishing?' they asked. 'Here is this man performing many miraculous signs.

 

48 만일 그를 이대로 두면 모든 사람이 그를 믿을 것이요 그리고 로마인들이 와서 우리 땅과 민족을 빼앗아 가리라 하니

48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.'

 

  바리새인들과 대제사장들이 예수님의 표적을 그대로 인정하나 매우 이상한 걱정을 하고 있습니다. 그들은 예수님의 선하신 이 표적이 무엇을 의미하는지 믿음 안에서 바르게 판단하지 못합니다. 오히려 예수로 인한 민중 운동으로 로마 정부가 유대인을 탄압하지 않을 까 우려합니다.

 

49 그 중의 한 사람 그 해의 대제사장인 가야바가 그들에게 말하되 너희가 아무 것도 알지 못하는도다

49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, 'You know nothing at all!

 

  당시 대제사장은 로마 정부에 의해 해마다 변동 되었습니다. 그해 대제사장 가야바가 사악한 계획을 세우고 다른 사람들을 충동합니다.

 

50 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽어서 온 민족이 망하지 않게 되는 것이 너희에게 유익한 줄을 생각하지 아니하는도다 하였으니

50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.'

 

  가야바는 예수 한사람만 희생 시키면 유대 민족 전체는 안전하다고 말합니다. 가야바가 하는 이 말은 그의 원래 의도와 상관없이, 성령에 의해 예수님의 대속의 죽음을 예언한 것이 되었습니다. 유대의 마지막 대제사장인 가야바가 예수님 대속의 고난에 대해 공직의 위치에서 예언한 것은 중대한 것입니다. (49-52) 

이는 마치 발람이 이스라엘의 장래에 대해서 예언한 것과 같은 것입니다. (민 24:17), 다윗의 원수인 사울이 다윗의 일에 대해 예언한 것과도 같은 양상 입니다. (삼상 26:25)

 

51 이 말은 스스로 함이 아니요 그 해의 대제사장이므로 예수께서 그 민족을 위하시고

51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,

 

52 또 그 민족만 위할 뿐 아니라 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 미리 말함이러라

52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

 

  가야바 자신은 예수님을 해치려는 사악한 마음으로 말한 것이었으나, 그것을 성령께서 예언으로 이용하셨습니다. 

 

53 이 날부터는 그들이 예수를 죽이려고 모의하니라

53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

 

54 그러므로 예수께서 다시 유대인 가운데 드러나게 다니지 아니하시고 거기를 떠나 빈 들 가까운 곳인 에브라임이라는 동네에 가서 제자들과 함께 거기 머무르시니라

54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

 

  예수님의 선하신 사역을 보고도 죽이려고 하니 그들이 얼마나 잘못된 판단을 하는지 보여줍니다. 죽은 사람을 살리신 생명의 구세주를 죽이려는 그들의 행동은 기이합니다. 선한 사역을 방해하는 사탄의 행동 입니다. 예수님은 그들의 이런 의도를 아시고 광야 깊숙이 위치한 한 마을로 피신하십니다. 하나님의 때가 이르기 전에 잡히지 않려는 의도였고, 하나님의 뜻에 순종 하셨습니다.

 

55 유대인의 유월절이 가까우매 많은 사람이 자기를 성결하게 하기 위하여 유월절 전에 시골에서 예루살렘으로 올라갔더니

55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.

 

  유대인들은 유월절 전의 결례를 지키려고 예루살렘으로 올라갑니다. 머리를 깎거나, 옷을 빠는 것 같은 자신을 성결케 하는 의식을 행하러 갑니다 (창 35:2, 출 19:10,11, 수 3:5)

 

56 그들이 예수를 찾으며 성전에 서서 서로 말하되 너희 생각에는 어떠하냐 그가 명절에 오지 아니하겠느냐 하니

56 They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"

 

57 이는 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 누구든지 예수 있는 곳을 알거든 신고하여 잡게 하라 명령하였음이러라

57 But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, he should report it so that they might arrest him.

 

  유대인들은 예수님을 잡으려고 이미 모든 준비를 마친 상태입니다. 민중들은 예수님이 위기에 처할것을 알면서도, 냉정하게 객관적으로 예수님을 잡기 위한 적절한 시기라 대화를 합니다.
