사도행전 21장 :30-40

30 온 성이 소동하여 백성이 달려와 모여 바울을 잡아 성전 밖으로 끌고 나가니 문들이 곧 닫히더라

31 그들이 그를 죽이려 할 때에 온 예루살렘이 요란하다는 소문이 군대의 천부장에게 들리매

32 그가 급히 군인들과 백부장들을 거느리고 달려 내려가니 그들이 천부장과 군인들을 보고 바울 치기를 그치는지라

33 이에 천부장이 가까이 가서 바울을 잡아 두 쇠사슬로 결박하라 명하고 그가 누구이며 그가 무슨 일을 하였느냐 물으니

34 무리 가운데서 어떤 이는 이런 말로, 어떤 이는 저런 말로 소리 치거늘 천부장이 소동으로 말미암아 진상을 알 수 없어 그를 영내로 데려가라 명하니라

35 바울이 층대에 이를 때에 무리의 폭행으로 말미암아 군사들에게 들려가니

36 이는 백성의 무리가 그를 없이하자고 외치며 따라 감이러라

37 바울을 데리고 영내로 들어가려 할 그 때에 바울이 천부장에게 이르되 내가 당신에게 말할 수 있느냐 이르되 네가 헬라 말을 아느냐

38 그러면 네가 이전에 소요를 일으켜 자객 사천 명을 거느리고 광야로 가던 애굽인이 아니냐

39 바울이 이르되 나는 유대인이라 소읍이 아닌 길리기아 다소 시의 시민이니 청컨대 백성에게 말하기를 허락하라 하니

40 천부장이 허락하거늘 바울이 층대 위에 서서 백성에게 손짓하여 매우 조용히 한 후에 히브리 말로 말하니라

 

Acts of the Apostles 21:30-40

 

30 The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut.

31 While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar.

32 He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

33 The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.

34 Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another, and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks.

35 When Paul reached the steps, the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers.

The crowd that followed kept shouting, 'Away with him!'

37 As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, 'May I say something to you?' 'Do you speak Greek?' he replied.

38 "Aren't you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the desert some time ago?"

39 Paul answered, 'I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.'

40 Having received the commander's permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic:

30 온 성이 소동하여 백성이 달려와 모여 바울을 잡아 성전 밖으로 끌고 나가니 문들이 곧 닫히더라

30 The whole city was aroused, and the people came running from all directions. Seizing Paul, they dragged him from the temple, and immediately the gates were shut.

선동자에 의해 유도된 소문은 온 성의 백성을 흥분 시킵니다. 이들은 비이성적이고 매우 폭력적인 성향을 보입니다. 바울에게 어떤 변명도 허락하지 않고, 성전에서 끌어내어 내보냅니다. 바울이 성전 안에서 살해 되는 것을 막고자, 성전 밖으로 끌어내어 폭행하려고 한 행동입니다.  동시에, 혹시 바울이 제단의 뿔을 잡아 신변보호 하고 대피할  가능성을 미리 막으려 한 것입니다. 

 

31 그들이 그를 죽이려 할 때에 온 예루살렘이 요란하다는 소문이 군대의 천부장에게 들리매

31 While they were trying to kill him, news reached the commander of the Roman troops that the whole city of Jerusalem was in an uproar.

무리들이 바울에게 폭력을 휘두르고 죽이려 할 때 치안을 담당한 천부장이 개입합니다. 오순절 기간이라서, 로마군 책임자인 천부장은 유대인의 폭동과 소요 사태를 방지하고자 유대인의 움직임을 주시했을 것입니다, 이 천부장은 글라우디오 루시아 입니다.  

 

32 그가 급히 군인들과 백부장들을 거느리고 달려 내려가니 그들이 천부장과 군인들을 보고 바울 치기를 그치는지라

32 He at once took some officers and soldiers and ran down to the crowd. When the rioters saw the commander and his soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

백부장들 이라는 표현으로 추측하면, 최소한 200명 이상의 군대가 출동했기에, 바울은 죽을 위기를 모면합니다. 바울을 죽이려던 유대인의 행동은 불법적인 것이고 그들은 사형을 집행할 자격이 없었습니다,

 

33 이에 천부장이 가까이 가서 바울을 잡아 두 쇠사슬로 결박하라 명하고 그가 누구이며 그가 무슨 일을 하였느냐 물으니

33 The commander came up and arrested him and ordered him to be bound with two chains. Then he asked who he was and what he had done.

  천부장은 폭력 당하는 바울을 일단 죄인이라는 가정하에 쇠사슬로 결박시킵니다. 죄인이라도 법의 절차에 의해 재판 받도록, 군중들이 바울을 해치지 못하도록 그들과 분리 시킵니다.

 

34 무리 가운데서 어떤 이는 이런 말로, 어떤 이는 저런 말로 소리 치거늘 천부장이 소동으로 말미암아 진상을 알 수 없어 그를 영내로 데려가라 명하니라

34 Some in the crowd shouted one thing and some another, and since the commander could not get at the truth because of the uproar, he ordered that Paul be taken into the barracks.

천부장이 실상을 파악하고자 하나, 군중들이 여러 말로 혼란하므로, 일단 군중을 안정시킵니다. 그리고 바울을 군대 주둔 지역으로 데려갑니다.

 

35 바울이 층대에 이를 때에 무리의 폭행으로 말미암아 군사들에게 들려가니

35 When Paul reached the steps, the violence of the mob was so great he had to be carried by the soldiers.

 

36 이는 백성의 무리가 그를 없이하자고 외치며 따라 감이러라

36 The crowd that followed kept shouting, 'Away with him!'

  연행되어 가는 바울을 따라가며, 죽이자고 외쳐되니, 유대인 군중은 극도로 흥분된 상태입니다. 

 

37 바울을 데리고 영내로 들어가려 할 그 때에 바울이 천부장에게 이르되 내가 당신에게 말할 수 있느냐 이르되 네가 헬라 말을 아느냐

37 As the soldiers were about to take Paul into the barracks, he asked the commander, 'May I say something to you?' 'Do you speak Greek?' he replied.

  당시 헬라어는 로마제국이 지배하는 지역의 공통언어 입니다. 그러나 헬라어를 사용할 정도의 교양을 갖춘 이들은 그리 많지 않았습니다. 죄인으로 잡힌 바울이 헬라어로 말하자, 천부장은 놀라서 ‘헬라어를 아느냐’고 질문을 합니다.

 

38 그러면 네가 이전에 소요를 일으켜 자객 사천 명을 거느리고 광야로 가던 애굽인이 아니냐

38 "Aren't you the Egyptian who started a revolt and led four thousand terrorists out into the desert some time ago?"

 

39 바울이 이르되 나는 유대인이라 소읍이 아닌 길리기아 다소 시의 시민이니 청컨대 백성에게 말하기를 허락하라 하니

39 Paul answered, 'I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no ordinary city. Please let me speak to the people.'

 조용한 영내로 들어가자 바울은 자신이 누구인지 침착하게 밝힙니다. 자신이 길리기아 다소 라는 큰 도시의 시민이라고 합니다. 바울의 부모들은 로마군에 의해 북부 팔레스틴이 침략당할 때 길리기아 다소로 이주 했었습니다. 바울은 천부장에게 자신이 로마 시민임을 밝힌뒤 유대 백성에게 복음을 전할 기회를 갖고자 합니다. 

 

40 천부장이 허락하거늘 바울이 층대 위에 서서 백성에게 손짓하여 매우 조용히 한 후에 히브리 말로 말하니라

40 Having received the commander's permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned to the crowd. When they were all silent, he said to them in Aramaic:

  천부장은 바울의 요청을 허락합니다 바울은 자신과 복음에 대해 증거하기 시작합니다. 바울은 흥분한 예루살렘 유대인과 디아스포라 유대인을 조용히 시킨 다음에 ‘히브리’ 말로 말합니다. 이 히브리말은 구약시대의 히브리어와는 다른 것입니다. 포로기 이후에 아람어가  유대인들이 주로 사용하는 언어였습니다.
