사도행전 28장: 1-20

1 우리가 구조된 후에 안즉 그 섬은 멜리데라 하더라

2 비가 오고 날이 차매 원주민들이 우리에게 특별한 동정을 하여 불을 피워 우리를 다 영접하더라

3 바울이 나무 한 묶음을 거두어 불에 넣으니 뜨거움으로 말미암아 독사가 나와 그 손을 물고 있는지라

4 원주민들이 이 짐승이 그 손에 매달려 있음을 보고 서로 말하되 진실로 이 사람은 살인한 자로다 바다에서는 구조를 받았으나 공의가 그를 살지 못하게 함이로다 하더니

5 바울이 그 짐승을 불에 떨어 버리매 조금도 상함이 없더라

6 그들은 그가 붓든지 혹은 갑자기 쓰러져 죽을 줄로 기다렸다가 오래 기다려도 그에게 아무 이상이 없음을 보고 돌이켜 생각하여 말하되 그를 신이라 하더라

7 이 섬에서 가장 높은 사람 보블리오라 하는 이가 그 근처에 토지가 있는지라 그가 우리를 영접하여 사흘이나 친절히 머물게 하더니

8 보블리오의 부친이 열병과 이질에 걸려 누워 있거늘 바울이 들어가서 기도하고 그에게 안수하여 낫게 하매

9 이러므로 섬 가운데 다른 병든 사람들이 와서 고침을 받고

10 후한 예로 우리를 대접하고 떠날 때에 우리 쓸 것을 배에 실었더라

11 석 달 후에 우리가 그 섬에서 겨울을 난 알렉산드리아 배를 타고 떠나니 그 배의 머리 장식은 디오스구로라

12 수라구사에 대고 사흘을 있다가

13 거기서 둘러가서 레기온에 이르러 하루를 지낸 후 남풍이 일어나므로 이튿날 보디올에 이르러

14 거기서 형제들을 만나 그들의 청함을 받아 이레를 함께 머무니라 그래서 우리는 이와 같이 로마로 가니라

15 그 곳 형제들이 우리 소식을 듣고 압비오 광장과 트레이스 타베르네까지 맞으러 오니 바울이 그들을 보고 하나님께 감사하고 담대한 마음을 얻으니라

16 우리가 로마에 들어가니 바울에게는 자기를 지키는 한 군인과 함께 따로 있게 허락하더라

17 사흘 후에 바울이 유대인 중 높은 사람들을 청하여 그들이 모인 후에 이르되 여러분 형제들아 내가 이스라엘 백성이나 우리 조상의 관습을 배척한 일이 없는데 예루살렘에서 로마인의 손에 죄수로 내준 바 되었으니

18 로마인은 나를 심문하여 죽일 죄목이 없으므로 석방하려 하였으나

19 유대인들이 반대하기로 내가 마지 못하여 가이사에게 상소함이요 내 민족을 고발하려는 것이 아니니라

20 이러므로 너희를 보고 함께 이야기하려고 청하였으니 이스라엘의 소망으로 말미암아 내가 이 쇠사슬에 매인 바 되었노라

 

Acts of the Apostles 28:1-20

1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta.

2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold.

3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.

4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, 'This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.'

5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.

6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably.

8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.

9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.

10 They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.

11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.

12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.

13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli.

14 There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.

15 The brothers there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged.

16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.

17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: 'My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

18 They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.

19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar-not that I had any charge to bring against my own people.

20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.'

  원주민들은 다행히 동정을 베풀고 바울 일행을 배려해 줍니다.

 

3 바울이 나무 한 묶음을 거두어 불에 넣으니 뜨거움으로 말미암아 독사가 나와 그 손을 물고 있는지라

3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.

 

4 원주민들이 이 짐승이 그 손에 매달려 있음을 보고 서로 말하되 진실로 이 사람은 살인한 자로다 바다에서는 구조를 받았으나 공의가 그를 살지 못하게 함이로다 하더니

4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, 'This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.'

 

5 바울이 그 짐승을 불에 떨어 버리매 조금도 상함이 없더라

5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.

  바울이 뱀에 물려도 당황하지 않고 손을 흔들어 뱀을 불에 떨어 뜨립니다. 원주민들은 바울이 독사에 물린 죄인이니, 벌을 받아 당연히 죽을 것이라 기대했습니다. 그들은 공의를 믿었고 인과 응보가 있다고 생각했습니다.

 

6 그들은 그가 붓든지 혹은 갑자기 쓰러져 죽을 줄로 기다렸다가 오래 기다려도 그에게 아무 이상이 없음을 보고 돌이켜 생각하여 말하되 그를 신이라 하더라

6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

  멜리데 원주민들은 바울이 죽지 않자, ‘신이라’ 했다는 것은 ‘신의 사랑을 받은 자’라는 의미로 사용된 것입니다.

 

7 이 섬에서 가장 높은 사람 보블리오라 하는 이가 그 근처에 토지가 있는지라 그가 우리를 영접하여 사흘이나 친절히 머물게 하더니

7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably.

이 섬의 가장 높은 사람은, 섬의 최고 행정 책임자인 로마에서 파견된 행정관입니다. 

 

8 보블리오의 부친이 열병과 이질에 걸려 누워 있거늘 바울이 들어가서 기도하고 그에게 안수하여 낫게 하매

8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.

  이 열병은 멜리데와 지중해 연안에 널리 퍼진 말라리아 같은 질병입니다. 의사 누가가 진단을 내렸으나, 환자가 나은 것은 바울을 통해 기도와 안수에 의한 하나님의 능력으로 이루어졌습니다.,

 

9 이러므로 섬 가운데 다른 병든 사람들이 와서 고침을 받고

9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.

바울이 보블리오 부친을 고친 소문이 퍼지자, 많은 병자들이 몰려와서 치료받게 됩니다. 이 때 ‘고침 받고’ [데라퓨오] 는 의학적 용어입니다. 바울의 안수에 의해 그들이 치유 받았고, 의사인 누가가 그들의 완치 상태를 확진하였기에 이 단어를 사용한 것으로 보입니다. 

 

10 후한 예로 우리를 대접하고 떠날 때에 우리 쓸 것을 배에 실었더라

10 They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.

  섬 사람들은 존경과 감사의 표현으로 항해에 필요한 물품을 제공합니다. 바울 한 사람으로 인해 275명이 섬에서 겨울을 무사히 보내고 다시 항해에 오르게 됩니다. 하나님은 사랑하는 당신의 자녀를 지켜주시고 은혜를 베풀어주시는 분이십니다. 

 

11 석 달 후에 우리가 그 섬에서 겨울을 난 알렉산드리아 배를 타고 떠나니 그 배의 머리 장식은 디오스구로라

 11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.

  ‘디오스구로’는 제우스와 레다 사이에 태어난 쌍둥이 아들 ‘카스토르와 폴록스를 말합니다,  이들의 쌍둥이 별자리 ‘제미니’는 폭풍가운데서도 안전하게 해주는 항해의 수호자로 여겨졌습니다. 그래서 배의 앞머리 양편에 이 쌍둥이 를 그리고 ‘디오스구로’라는 이름을 기록했을 것입니다. 

 

12 수라구사에 대고 사흘을 있다가

12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.

  이 도시는 섬의 수도로 상당히 번창한 항구도시입니다. 유명한 수학자 아르키메데스의 고향입니다. 

 

13 거기서 둘러가서 레기온에 이르러 하루를 지낸 후 남풍이 일어나므로 이튿날 보디올에 이르러

13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli.

  보디올은 나폴리 만에 있는 네압볼리의 외항 입니다. 알렉산드리아에서 수송되어온 곡물은 이곳에서 내려져 내륙으로 이동됩니다.  이제 긴 해상 여행을 끝났습니다. 로마까지 220킬로의 도보여행이 남았고 이는 5일 정도가 소요되는 거리입니다.

 

14 거기서 형제들을 만나 그들의 청함을 받아 이레를 함께 머무니라 그래서 우리는 이와 같이 로마로 가니라

14 There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.

 

15 그 곳 형제들이 우리 소식을 듣고 압비오 광장과 트레이스 타베르네까지 맞으러 오니 바울이 그들을 보고 하나님께 감사하고 담대한 마음을 얻으니라

15 The brothers there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged.

  압비오 광장은 로마로 가는 압비아 대로상에 있는데 로마 감찰관 압비우스가 이 도로를 건설했기에 그의 이름을 딴것입니다. 로마의 장군들이 전쟁에서 승리하고 개선할 때, 군중들이 열렬한 환영하던 길입니다. 트레이스 타베르네는 세개의 숙소가 있던 곳으로 로마의 기독교인들이 이곳에서 바울을 맞으려고 기다리고 있었습니다. 그들의 환영을 받고 바울은 위로 받았을 것입니다.

 

16 우리가 로마에 들어가니 바울에게는 자기를 지키는 한 군인과 함께 따로 있게 허락하더라

16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.

  바울이 가이사에게 항소한 상태이니, 황제 휘하 부대의 책임자에게 넘겨집니다. 감옥에 감금 되지 않고  가벼운 감시만  받는 상태입니다. 사람들을 초청해서 만남을 나눌 정도로 충분한 자유가 허용되었습니다.

 

17 사흘 후에 바울이 유대인 중 높은 사람들을 청하여 그들이 모인 후에 이르되 여러분 형제들아 내가 이스라엘 백성이나 우리 조상의 관습을 배척한 일이 없는데 예루살렘에서 로마인의 손에 죄수로 내준 바 되었으니

17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: 'My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

  로마에 거주한 유대인들은 아직 하나의 통합된 조직은 없었기에, 지역의 공동체 장로, 지도자, 회당장 들을 초청한 것입니다. 바울이 유대인 지도자들을 자기 숙소로 초청한 이유는 아직  죄인의 신분인 자신을 변호하려는 목적이 있습니다. 그들이 자신에 대해 어떤 부정적인 소문을 전해들었는지 알고, 황제 앞에서 적적히 대응할 필요가 있었읍니다. 또한, 이 기회를 복음을 증거하는 기회로 삼고자 했습니다. 바울은 자신의 무죄와 로마인에게 넘겨진 사정을 설명합니다.

 

18 로마인은 나를 심문하여 죽일 죄목이 없으므로 석방하려 하였으나

18 They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.

  바울은 자신이 로마로 재판받으러 온 이유를 설명합니다, 자신에 대한 유대인의 적대감 때문에, 죄없이 죽을 위기에 처했기에 어쩔 수 없이 항소해서 오게 된 것이라고 설명합니다.

 

19 유대인들이 반대하기로 내가 마지 못하여 가이사에게 상소함이요 내 민족을 고발하려는 것이 아니니라

19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar-not that I had any charge to bring against my own people.

  유대인들이 자신을 죽이려 했으나 자신은 동족을 미워하지 않는다고 고백합니다.  

 

20 이러므로 너희를 보고 함께 이야기하려고 청하였으니 이스라엘의 소망으로 말미암아 내가 이 쇠사슬에 매인 바 되었노라

20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.'

  ‘이스라엘의 소망’은 죽은 자의 부활에 대한 소망을 말합니다. 바울은 이 소망이 예수 스리스도에 의해 완성되었다고 말해왔고, 유대인들은 이를 받아들이지 았았기 때문에 현재 죄인의 입장이 된것 이라고 설명합니다.
