사도행전 27장 :11- 21

11 백부장이 선장과 선주의 말을 바울의 말보다 더 믿더라

12 그 항구가 겨울을 지내기에 불편하므로 거기서 떠나 아무쪼록 뵈닉스에 가서 겨울을 지내자 하는 자가 더 많으니 뵈닉스는 그레데 항구라 한쪽은 서남을, 한쪽은 서북을 향하였더라

13 남풍이 순하게 불매 그들이 뜻을 이룬 줄 알고 닻을 감아 그레데 해변을 끼고 항해하더니

14 얼마 안 되어 섬 가운데로부터 유라굴로라는 광풍이 크게 일어나니

15 배가 밀려 바람을 맞추어 갈 수 없어 가는 대로 두고 쫓겨가다가

16  가우다라는 작은 섬 아래로 지나 간신히 거루를 잡아

17 끌어 올리고 줄을 가지고 선체를 둘러 감고 스르디스에 걸릴까 두려워하여 연장을 내리고 그냥 쫓겨가더니

18 우리가 풍랑으로 심히 애쓰다가 이튿날 사공들이 짐을 바다에 풀어 버리고

19 사흘째 되는 날에 배의 기구를 그들의 손으로 내버리니라

20 여러 날 동안 해도 별도 보이지 아니하고 큰 풍랑이 그대로 있으매 구원의 여망마저 없어졌더라

21 여러 사람이 오래 먹지 못하였으매 바울이 가운데 서서 말하되 여러분이여 내 말을 듣고 그레데에서 떠나지 아니하여 이 타격과 손상을 면하였더라면 좋을 뻔하였느니라

 

Acts of the Apostles :11-21

11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.

12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the 'northeaster,' swept down from the island.

15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.

17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.

20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: 'Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

항구라 한쪽은 서남을, 한쪽은 서북을 향하였더라

  ‘뵈닉스’는 감람나무라는 뜻입니다. 오늘의 ‘루트로’ 항구로 모든 방향에서 불어오는 바람을 막을 수 있는 지형조건이 있어서 겨울을 나기에 적합하다고 말합니다.

 

13 남풍이 순하게 불매 그들이 뜻을 이룬 줄 알고 닻을 감아 그레데 해변을 끼고 항해하더니

13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

 

14 얼마 안 되어 섬 가운데로부터 유라굴로라는 광풍이 크게 일어나니

14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the 'northeaster,' swept down from the island.

 ‘유라굴로’ [유라퀼론] 은 동북풍인 일종의 태풍입니다. 이 바람은 지형의 영향으로 생긴 바람으로, 남풍이 그레데섬 한가운데 있는 2100킬로 높이의 이다 산맥에서 반대의 기류가 만나 서로부딪치면 강력한 북동풍으로 됩니다. 유라굴로를 만난 배들은 방향조절이 불가능해서, 속수무책으로 아프리카 방향으로 밀리다가 암초에 부딪쳐 파선하게 됩니다. 

 

15 배가 밀려 바람을 맞추어 갈 수 없어 가는 대로 두고 쫓겨가다가

15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

유라굴로 태풍을 만난 배들은 바람이 부는대로 밀려가게 됩니다. 선원들이 조정하려해도 불가능한 상태에 휩싸입니다. 

 

16  가우다라는 작은 섬 아래로 지나 간신히 거루를 잡아

16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.

가우디 섬이 바람막이를 해주어서 선원들은 배 고물에 매달려 위태로웠던 거룻배를 갑판 위로 끌어 올리게 됩니다. 배가 파선할 경우 다른 항구로 비상상륙할 때 거룻배를 사용해야 되기에 잘 보존해야 됩니다.

 

17 끌어 올리고 줄을 가지고 선체를 둘러 감고 스르디스에 걸릴까 두려워하여 연장을 내리고 그냥 쫓겨가더니

17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

  ‘스르디스’는 모래톱, 모래수렁 입니다. 구레네 서쪽의 아프리카 해안과, 카르다스 부근에 있습니다. 본문의 스르디스는 아프리카 해안에 있는 큰 스르다스입니다.  이 스르디스에 걸리면 배는 헤어나올 수 없습니다. 그래서 선장은 미리 연장( 돛, 돛대, 닻, 밧줄 같은 것들)을 내려서 배가 서남쪽 아프리카 해안으로 밀려가는것을 최대한 막으려 고 합니다. 

 

18 우리가 풍랑으로 심히 애쓰다가 이튿날 사공들이 짐을 바다에 풀어 버리고

18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

폭풍이 호전되지 않자, 배를 가볍게 하고자 짐을 버립니다.

 

19 사흘째 되는 날에 배의 기구를 그들의 손으로 내버리니라

19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.

여전히 폭풍이 호전되지 않아, 배의 커다란 돛 무거운 돛대 등을 다 버립니다. 뱃사람들이 생명처럼 다루는 기구를 그들의 손으로 버리는 비참한 상황이 됩니다. 바울의 권고를 무시하고 항해를 강행한 결과가 이렇습니다.

 

20 여러 날 동안 해도 별도 보이지 아니하고 큰 풍랑이 그대로 있으매 구원의 여망마저 없어졌더라

20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

  바다의 풍랑이 여전히 계속되고, 하늘에는 짙은 구름이 끼어 있어서 낮의 해와 밤의 별도 볼수 없어, 배는 방향 감각을 상실하고, 절망적으로 표류합니다. 배가 항로를 이탈한 상태에서, 방향을 제시할 해와 달도 보이지 않아, 언제 어디서 암초나 모래톱에 걸려 파선 할지 알수 없습니다. 

 

21 여러 사람이 오래 먹지 못하였으매 바울이 가운데 서서 말하되 여러분이여 내 말을 듣고 그레데에서 떠나지 아니하여 이 타격과 손상을 면하였더라면 좋을 뻔하였느니라

21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: 'Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

 태풍에 시달린 사람들은 음식을 먹을 겨를도 없었고, 심한 배의 요동으로, 격렬한 멀미가 생겨 음식을 먹지 못했을 것입니다. 바울은 이들을 위로하고, 자신의 권고를 받아들이지 않아 발생한 이 불행을 지적하고, 이 불행에서 벗어날 희망을 제시합니다.
